The Bucyrus High School Boys Tennis program is set to host its first-ever invitational Saturday, April 25. The inaugural event, set to begin at 10:00 a.m. at the Bucyrus Secondary School, will feature six teams and honor long-time Bucyrus tennis coach Mr. Jim Grandy.

Mr. Grandy worked diligently to make the Bucyrus High School tennis facility one of the best in the area during his time as tennis coach. He personally designed the original courts and installed a water line for a crude water fountain. Upon Mr. Grandy's passing, his family determined that a portion of the memorial contributions should go to improve the tennis facility at BHS.

"After the pathway to the courts was paved by Oberlander's Tree and Landscape and Bucyrus Road Materials, we turned our attention to installing a water fountain at the facility," Grandy’s son Tom said. "We determined a true park-style water fountain, though much more expensive, would have longevity, and the school district kindly ran the water lines to the installation area and my father's memorial fund paid for the purchase of the fountain, a concrete footer, and professional installation."

Once the fountain was completed, Tom and the family turned their attention to improving the spectator experience at the tennis courts. They also determined that storage capabilities were needed for the Bucyrus tennis programs.

"It was rewarding to see the bleachers, despite their rotting condition, my dad had custom-built by the welding classes had withstood the test of time," Tom said. "However it was time to replace them, and dad's memorial fund was able to purchase four sets of aluminum bleachers and the concrete footers poured beneath them for safety.

"There was also a need for a storage shed for the teams to keep their equipment in, so a shed was re-purposed and a pad laid to place the shed on."

The Grandy family, along with the school district, has plans in place for additional updates to make to the tennis facility even better should more contributions come in to the memorial fund. Ultimately, the goal is to make the facility one that can host conference and district tournaments.

As for having a tennis tournament named in his father's honor, Tom believes his dad would be deeply touched by this honor, just as the family is now.

"It is truly humbling that the Jim Grandy Bucyrus Boys Tennis Invitational is named in honor of my father," Tom said. "When we went into this project, we had no intention of doing anything more than helping make the Bucyrus Community Tennis Courts an even finer facility through the contributions we had received.

"My father probably could never have imagined that a tournament would be named after him. He just did what he loved in teaching and coaching."

"We are very grateful that Tom and the Grandy family continue to have such a strong affinity for the Bucyrus City School District and our tennis programs," Superintendent Kevin Kimmel said. "It is only fitting that we recognize Jim Grandy's contributions to the district, along with his family’s continuing support, by naming the tennis invitational in his honor."
