Redmen Readers exceed challenge goal and principals spend day as princesses

On October 10, the students at Bucyrus Elementary School set out to achieve a goal to read more than 700,000 minutes. BES students challenged their principals, Mr. Todd Roll and Mr. Tim Souder, and asked if the duo would dress as a princess for the day should the reading goal be exceeded.

Fast forward nearly an entire school year, and the students at Bucyrus Elementary School not only hit their goal of 700,000. They exceeded the goal and tallied 762,396.

"This was a new reading challenge program for our school this year," BES Librarian Diane Kaple said. "Kim Binnix, our Right to Read committee and I thought a school year-long reading challenge would help stress the importance of reading to our students.

The principals, true to their word, put away their shirts and ties and donned elegant princess dresses May 1. Following the announcement and introduction of the "Princess Principals," Mr. Roll and Mr. Souder spent the day gliding through the Elementary School visiting every classroom to congratulate the students on exceeding their goal.

"This is a tremendous accomplishment for our entire school building," Roll said. "This was certainly the toughest challenge our Right to Read committee has prepared for the students, and I am proud of each and every student for every minute they read during this entire school year."

Throughout the challenge, each student that read a minimum of 1,000 minutes received "A Redmen Reader Lives Here" yard sign. A total of 266 Bucyrus Elementary students earned a yard sign for their efforts. Students could also earn stickers for hitting certain benchmarks for total minutes read.

"We had four students not only earn their yard sign, but they also earned every sticker possible," Kaple said. "We are very proud of the efforts of Natalie Spitler, Amber Ransom, Natalie Stover and Bailey Douglas for earning every reward possible in this year’s reading challenge.”

Top readers in each grade level were announced as well. These students included: Lilian Engelhorn (K)-7,012; Jake Stover (1st)-8,521; Bailey Douglas (2nd)-12,925; Keaton Sharp (3rd)-6,124; Quintessa Spellbound (4th)-6,015; Natalie Spitler (5th)-16,570.

For their outstanding reading achievements, the Bucyrus City School District Board of Education awarded Board Commendations to every student that earned “A Redmen Reader Lives Here” yard sign. The students were recognized during the board’s regular monthly meeting May 21.

Members of the Elementary School Right to Read Committee were recognized during the meeting and include: Leah Barger, Kim Binnix, Kristine Fourman, Becky Gottfried, Kim Haldeman, Deb Hoover, Brittany Kaple, Diane Kaple (Chairman), Jenay Pfeifer, Rhonda Shifley and Diane Spitler.
