The Bucyrus High School Boys Tennis program will host the 2017 Jim Grandy
Tennis Invitational Saturday, April 22. The event begins at 10:00 a.m. at the Bucyrus Secondary School and will feature boys’ tennis teams from Bucyrus, Tiffin Calvert, Galion, Marion Harding, River Valley, Mansfield St. Peter’s and Upper Sandusky and Willard, as well as honor long-time Bucyrus tennis coach Mr. Jim Grandy.
Mr. Grandy, who personally designed the original courts and installed a water line for a crude water fountain, worked diligently to make the Bucyrus High School tennis facility one of the best in the area during his time as tennis coach. Upon Mr. Grandy’s passing, his family determined that a portion of the memorial contributions should go to improve the tennis facility at BHS.
“The Grandy family has been a major contributor to the improvements at the tennis courts,” said Activities/Athletics Director Rick Rawson. “Our hope is that the weather will cooperate this year so we can complete the invitational and crown the 2017 champion!”
Mr. Grandy’s son, Tom, has been instrumental in helping the district identify necessary upgrades to the facilities and helping the district finance those projects. The paved pathway to the tennis courts, new park-style water fountain, new aluminum bleachers and improved storage facility were all made possible by Mr. Grandy’s memorial fund.
“We are thankful that Tom and the Grandy family continue to have such a strong affinity for the Bucyrus City School District and our tennis programs,” said Superintendent Kevin Kimmel. “We plan to continue the invitational for many years to ensure the legacy of a man who had such a profound impact on so many Bucyrus students.”
Additional equipment upgrades for this year’s invitational have been made possible by generous donations from Spreng Capital Management, Paul Moser Nationwide Insurance, Bucyrus Elks Lodge #156 and Dr. Glenn McMurray D.D.S. Sponsor signs will be displayed at the Bucyrus Tennis Courts thanks to a donation from Dean’s Trophy House.
