Bucyrus Summer Food Service Program receives Gold level recognition
Posted on 02/27/2015

The Bucyrus City School District Summer Food Service Program has been recognized as a Gold level sponsor by Children's Hunger Alliance. Whitney Gherman, Manager of School and Summer Nutrition for the Alliance, presented a Certificate of Excellence to Food Services General Manager Lorie Pennington and Superintendent Kevin Kimmel during the district's regular Board of Education meeting Feb. 27.

Children's Hunger Alliance recognizes select sponsors each year in the Ohio Summer Nutrition Scorecard. According to the report, Bucyrus City Schools exceeded summer 2013 federal nutrition standards by offering more whole grains, fresh fruit and vegetables. The report also awards top scoring counties with the highest participation rates in summer nutrition programs. Crawford County served 13 summer lunch participants for every 100-school lunch participants, exceeding the state average of 10:100.

Summer nutrition programs are important for the many Bucyrus children that lose access to healthy school meals during the summer. The Summer Food Service Program is a way to extend the benefit of school meals into the summer months for these children.

"We are very fortunate to have the ability to offer the Summer Food Service Program to our Bucyrus children," Kimmel said. "This recognition shows that Mrs. Pennington and her staff are doing a fantastic job providing healthy, nutritious meals to our children year round."
