In order to commend Bucyrus students for their hard work and academic achievements throughout the 2014-2015 school year, the Secondary School will be holding its annual Academic Awards Banquet Sunday, April 26. The middle school portion of the program will take place at 2 p.m., followed by the high school program at 5 p.m.

The keynote speaker during the middle school program will be Bucyrus alum Brett Love. At the conclusion of his speech, awards will be handed out in the six following categories:

  • Perfect attendance for the year
  • Perfect attendance for entire middle school career
  • 4.0 GPA for the year
  • 4.0 GPA for entire middle school career
  • 3.99-3.5 GPA for the year

The middle school awards ceremony represents the commitment of the Bucyrus City School District to support, honor and recognize academic achievement at all levels.

Later that evening, high school students earning a 3.0 or above will also be recognized for their hard work in the area of academics. Dinner, provided by Special Occasions, will be served from 5-6 p.m. in the high school gym. The Food Services department and Sodexo are providing dessert for those in attendance.

Following dinner, the awards portion of the program will begin in the high school gym at 6 p.m. At this time, additional guests are invited to attend. Students will receive awards in the following categories:

  • Freshmen: 3.0 GPA or above
  • Sophomore: 3.0 - 3.24 GPA & 3.25 - 4.0 GPA
  • Juniors: 3.0 - 3.49 GPA & 3.5 - 4.0 GPA

In addition to academic awards, scholarships will be awarded by the Academic Boosters and seniors earning a 3.75 GPA or above will receive special recognition by a teacher of their choosing. Several student scholarships are partially funded through a partnership with the Bucyrus Athletic department through Scholar-Athlete Nights during the football and basketball seasons. The Academic Boosters would also like to acknowledge and thank the Bay Area Gas Consortium for their contribution to provide additional student scholarship opportunities.

"The Academic Boosters have been putting on this banquet for several years," Academic Booster Club event chairperson Amy Plumley said. "It has always been very well received and is a nice way to honor the students for their hard work in the classroom."

The Academic Boosters are in need of volunteers for their organization. Please contact Secondary School Principal, Dr. Mark Burke, for ways to get involved.
