The Bucyrus Safety Town program is back again for children in Bucyrus. This year’s program will be split in two sessions from 9:00-11:30 a.m. and 12:30-3:00 p.m., and will be held at Bucyrus Elementary School June 6-10, 2016.

Bucyrus Safety Town is a program for all children entering kindergarten living in the City of Bucyrus. Bucyrus firefighters, police officers, teachers, and special guests will interact with children daily. Participants will receive instruction about personal safety. Issues such as stranger danger, pedestrian safety, fire safety, railroad safety, bicycle safety, car and bus safety will be presented in a fun and age appropriate manner.

“Last year, 65 students participated in the Safety Town program,” Safety Town President and Mayor Sarah Lipscomb said. “We hope to have 80 students participate in this year’s program.”

Lipscomb, a freshman at Bucyrus High School and Girl Scout, spearheaded the return of the program three years ago with assistance from the Bucyrus City School District and local safety forces as a community service project.

“We added the afternoon session last year and accommodated many more students,” Lipscomb said. “We’re continuing to purchase items to enhance the experience of the Safety Town Village.”

Registration for this event is now open, and completed forms will be accepted until May 16, 2016. Registration forms are available at the Bucyrus Elementary School and Bucyrus Police Department. Forms are also available for download from Elementary School page on the school district’s website at http://bucyrusschools.org/cms/One.aspx?portalId=33381&pageId=370000. Completed forms should be returned to the Bucyrus Elementary School office.

“I’m impressed with the hard work and dedication Sarah and her mother Nancy put into planning and organizing this very important learning experience for the children in our community,” Bucyrus Superintendent Kevin Kimmel said. “We are proud to host Safety Town and hope more students will take advantage of the opportunity to interact with our public safety forces and learn how to be safe in our community.”
