Bucyrus High School National Honor Society is doing its part to help
the Bucyrus and Crawford County communities through a raffle to raise
funds for the United Way of Crawford County.
National Honor Society vice-president Sam Van Voorhis has served as
the catalyst for the fundraiser. The idea for the raffle came after he
had a conversation with Secondary School Principal Dr. Mark Burke.
"We do some things, like Random Acts of Kindness treat bags and
monthly breakfast for a teacher, as a group in the building but not
enough in my opinion," Van Voorhis said. "Dr. Burke told me that United
Way could always use help in their fundraising efforts, so we thought it
would be a good idea to raise money and help our school and community
at the same time."
Tickets can be purchased through Friday, March 13, for a chance to
win a variety of prizes that range from gift cards to local restaurants,
all-season Athletic Passes for the 2015-2016 school year and one month
of free guitar, piano or voice lessons through the month of April.
"Sam and the rest of the members of National Honor Society planned
the entire raffle from getting collection jars, to finding tickets, to
soliciting donations to be raffle," National Honor Society advisor
Shannon Henize said. "They organized their duties with regard to selling
tickets and wrote the announcement that has been read every day since
the middle of last week."
Secondary School staff members have also donated t-shirts, an ice
cream sundae party for a class, donuts for a class, an independent study
day and an open lunch or breakfast for a class, just to name a few.
"It's important for kids to be involved in doing for others because
they need to realize that they CAN make an impact," Henize said. "These
are our leaders of tomorrow, so getting involved today is essential for
them and for us."
