A small group of eighth grade students from Bucyrus Middle School presented their new group, BMS Anti-Bullying Club (ABC), during the regular meeting of the Bucyrus City School District Board of Education Nov. 16.

Amadia Aguirre, Darrian Eaton, Aryah Hensley, Jada Pigott and Abbie Stander shared their vision for the Anti-Bullying Club for the remainder of the 2017-2018 school year. The students, with assistance from School Counselor Anne Devine and Secondary School Principal Dr. Mark Burke, developed a mission statement and anti- bullying pledge for students to sign.

“I’ve been meeting with this small group of students weekly since they approached me with the idea in October,” said Devine. “We approached Dr. Burke with the idea and he challenged the students to develop their mission and anti-bullying pledge, and I think these students have done a fantastic job bringing this new student group to life.”

Posters of various sizes have been posted throughout the Middle School portion of the Secondary School to build interest in the club. The students’ goal is to have monthly club meetings focused on anti-bullying educational programming.

“I’m very proud of the work these students have done to this point,” said Dr. Burke. “Their initiative to approach Ms. Devine and spend the time researching other anti-bullying clubs in other districts shows their passion to help make our schools an even better learning environment."

The board presented a commendation to Mrs. Michelle Vance, who was named the 2017 Ohio Association for Gifted Children Teacher of the Year. They also presented commendations to students whose art work has been on display in the Lincoln Administrative Center offices.

Students recognized during the meeting included: Jada Dalton, Mya Rothhaar, Gracie Quaintance, Jaylon Rupe, Dakota Hedrick, Mackenzie Booth, Kaiden Bloomfield, Riley Frazee, Bailey Howell, Samantha Chase, Kelsey Carver, Caleigh Rister and Dayla Sandlin.

All agenda items were approved as presented during the business portion of the meeting. The Board of Education will hold its annual Organizational Meeting at 5:00 p.m. in the Lincoln Administrative Center Jan. 10.

Following a recess to executive session, the Board of Education adjourned the meeting with no action being taken. The next regular meeting of the Bucyrus City School District Board of Education will begin at 5:00 p.m. in the Lincoln Administrative Center Thursday, Dec. 14.
