On January 8, the students at Bucyrus Elementary School set out to achieve a goal to read more than 500,000 minutes. BES Principals Ms. Erica Dietzel and Mr. Timothy Souder raised the stakes when they agreed to run a Warrior Dash-like obstacle course should the students exceed their goal.

Fast forward four months, and the students at Bucyrus Elementary School not only hit their goal of 500,000. They exceeded the goal by reading 505,976 minutes.

“The students and staff have embraced the Reading Challenges they’ve been presented every school year,” BES Librarian Diane Kaple said. “Kim Binnix, our Right to Read committee and I are incredibly grateful to the Elementary School staff and our students’ families for working so hard with the students to exceed this year’s goal.”

The principals kept their word and met in the front courtyard of the Elementary School May 10 to pay up. Ms. Dietzel and Mr. Souder were dressed in running clothes with the intention of getting incredibly dirty and filthy while running the obstacle course. Members of the Right to Read Committee covered the principals in colored powder while they ran over tires, slide through the tunnel of ooze and eventually finished by crawling through mud.

“This is a great accomplishment for our entire school building,” Dietzel said. “This was a tough challenge our Right to Read committee prepared for the students, and I am proud of each and every student for every minute they read.”

Members of the Elementary School Right to Read Committee include: Leah Barger, Lisa Blizzard, Kim Binnix, Kristine Fourman, Kim Haldeman, Molly Hannah, Amy Hawkins, Brittany Kaple, Diane Kaple (Chairman), Danica McGowan Jenay Pfeifer, and Tiffany Powers.

“Our Elementary School Right to Read committee does a phenomenal job of developing creative, new ideas that engage our students in reading,” Superintendent Kevin Kimmel said. “I am proud of all the BES students, their families and our staff for working diligently throughout the entire school year to show their commitment to becoming better readers!”
