Bucyrus Elementary launches summer reading challenge

With the recent success of the yearlong reading challenges for students during the school year, the Bucyrus Elementary School Library has launched a new summer reading challenge for students. The theme for the summer challenge, which is centered around bowling, is “Roll Through Your Summer with Reading.”

Students participating in the program are encouraged to read 20 minutes each day throughout the summer. For every 20 minutes a student reads, they earn a “strike”. Packets for the challenge were sent home with students prior to the end of the school year, and include details about what is required to complete the challenge.

“By encouraging independent reading this summer, we hope our students will experience the joy that leads to becoming lifelong readers,” librarian Diane Kaple said. “All students who complete the summer reading challenge will be treated to a bowling and pizza party at Suburban Lanes.”

New to the Elementary School is a Little Free Library called “The Book Bot.” This new addition is located outside the school’s front entrance on Hopley Avenue.

“I saw the design on Pinterest and thought it would be great for our student”, Kaple said. “It took some time to locate an old newspaper box, and I found one from the Sandusky Register, who kindly donated it to our school.”

Kaple approached former BES student Bailey Plumley to develop the design for the new addition. Plumley, who painted a mural just inside the main entrance of the building, developed the idea for the Book Bot.

“The students absolutely love it,” librarian Kim Binnix said. “We are so thankful that the Sandusky Register donated the box and that Bailey gave so willingly of his time to design it for us."

“I chose a robot because the shape of the box matched that of a robot,” Plumley said. “I love the idea of the Little Free Library, and enjoy helping to promote literacy to the younger students in our schools.”
