Bucyrus Elementary kicks off 2015-2016 Reading Challenge

The Bucyrus Elementary School issued a reading challenge to its students during the Reading Challenge Kickoff Assembly January 8. The Right to Read Committee and Staff Singers entertained students with a skit and songs prior to issuing this year’s reading challenge.

The challenge: read for enjoyment at home, record reading minutes daily and meet the building goal of 500,000 minutes. The Reading Challenge, “Read Across America”, kicked off January 8 and ends March 4.

“At BES, we are very proud of our readers and are working hard to create a love of reading,” Librarian Diane Kaple said. “This year’s theme includes each classroom sending out a ‘Redmen Reader’ to their assigned state.”

In addition to mailing out the “Redmen Reader” to each state, the Elementary School will utilize a Google Map to show where each class has sent their Reader. The idea for this year’s theme is based on the “Flat Stanley” series of children’s books.

“The Right to Read Committee has put together a terrific reading challenge program for our students,” Associate Principal Timothy Souder said. “We hope all our students and their families will help us reach our Reading Challenge goal.”

The Right to Read Committee issued one final challenge to the students involving Elementary Principal Erica Dietzel and Assistant Princpal Timothy Souder during the kickoff assembly. If the students exceed the goal of 500,000 minutes during this year’s program, Dietzel and Souder will run an obstacle course similar to those seen in the Tough Mudder and Warrior Dash competitions.

“Ms. Dietzel and Mr. Souder continue the tradition of our principals being very supportive of our Right to Read program through the Principal’s Challenge,” Kaple said. “Last year, our students reached the Principal’s Challenge goal and enjoyed seeing Mr. Roll (now retired) and Mr. Souder dressed as princesses for the day. Our students are excited to meet and exceed this year’s goal and see Ms. Dietzel and Mr. Souder run the mud course!”
