Bucyrus Board of Education unanimously approves calendar changes

The Bucyrus City School District Board of Education unanimously approved a resolution to modify the calendar for the current 2014-2015 school year to address the increased use of calamity days during its special meeting Feb. 6. The decision by the Board of Education means the district's doors will be open for students and teachers on Monday, Feb. 16 (President's Day), Friday, March 27 and Monday, April 6 (day after Easter).

To date, the Bucyrus City School District has missed a total of eight (8) school days. There were concerns that the current number of missed days would adversely impact student achievement and performance, despite the fact that the district's calendar exceeds the state required minimum instructional hours for the school year.

"I first want to thank the Bucyrus Education Association and Bucyrus Organization of School Support for their vision and willingness to help our students excel in the classroom," Superintendent Kevin Kimmel said. "This decision means that our students will be making up missed days of learning with the greatest resource we have in the district; our teachers."

The Board also unanimously passed a resolution that will implement the use of a "Blizzard Program," should the need arise due to more inclement weather school closures. This “Blizzard Bag” program, first implemented during the 2013-14 school year, will allow the district to continue instruction during a total of three additional calamity days. Further school closures beyond the three "Blizzard Bag" days would require the district to add days at the end of school calendar and extend the academic year into June.

"The decisions we made tonight, in cooperation with our Education Association and Support Staff, mean that students will have the essential instructional time with our teachers," Board of Education President Bradley Murtiff said. "We have fantastic teachers and a tremendous support staff, and I appreciate them putting student success first in their decision-making process related to this issue."

A letter detailing the make-up day schedule, along with the use of the "Blizzard Bag" program, will be sent home with students Wednesday, Feb. 11. Additional details, along with the letter, can be found on the district’s website at www.bucyrusschools.org.
