Backpack Program Receives Beacon Grant from Local Elks Lodge

The outpouring of support recently for the nutritional well being of children in the Bucyrus community has been tremendous. The financial support for the Bucyrus Backpack Program has been overwhelming and continues to grow. The Bucyrus Elks Lodge #156, through the Elks National Foundation Grand Lodge, awarded a $1,000 Beacon Grant to the Backpack Program.

Bucyrus Elementary School Walks for a Cure

Bucyrus Elementary School students and staff are all too familiar with one of the nastiest words in the English language. Cancer. Several staff members were diagnosed in the past four years and have successfully beat cancer. To show support for these staff members and the countless others battling cancer, the students and staff held the first annual Bucyrus Elementary School "Redmen for the Cure" Walk to benefit the Susan G. Komen Foundation May 14.

Board of Education Recognizes Volunteers

At a time when school finances are going through turbulent times, the need for quality volunteers to mentor and work with students is critically high. For the Bucyrus Elementary School, the volunteers from the community have been a tremendous blessing for students and staff. For their tireless service to bettering the school district, the Board of Education awarded commendations to 40 Elementary School volunteers during the regular board meeting May 21.

Teacher Appreciation Week throughout the United States is May 6-10. The Bucyrus Elementary School Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) will be celebrating with Elementary School teachers during the week by giving each teacher a Subway gift card and cookies.

The Bucyrus High School Golf Team will be hosting a spring Golf Camp May 14-16 and May 21-23 from 4-5:30 p.m. at the Golf Club of Bucyrus. Students in grades four through eight are encouraged to attend.

Bucyrus Launches After School Dinner Program

Many students rely on their school district for meals. Studies have shown students do not perform well in school when they do not have enough to eat. Recognizing a growing need for better nutrition for its students, the Bucyrus City Schools has launched an after school dinner program.
