BOE Votes to Waive Academic, Athletic Fees for 2012-13 School Year
The Bucyrus City Schools Board of Education recently voted to waive all fees, both academic and athletic, for the 2012-13 school year.
“The Board of Education is committed to providing a quality, well-rounded education for all of our students without the burden of additional fees charged to the families,” Superintendent Kevin Kimmel said. “This is evident with the recent resolution to waive both extracurricular and co-curricular fees for the 2012-2013 school year. Even in this tough financial climate for our school district, we will continue to explore all other avenues to operate more efficiently without passing the financial burden on to the families.”
Principal Matthew Henderson agreed, ensuring all students will be provided with any materials needed to excel in the classroom. “I firmly support the Board's decision to waive class fees for our students. Many of our families are struggling without adding more financial burden from the school. We will be resourceful in providing students with the materials they need to be successful academically.”
Athletic and Activities Director Tom Jeffrey is also grateful to the Board for its recent vote to waive the payto-participate fee, believing it will have a positive impact on those showing interest in athletics. “I definitely support the Board’s decision to waive the participation fees again this year and believe it will allow our students to continue to participate in the outstanding array of athletic organizations and musical groups offered here at Bucyrus. The Board, in my time here, has always been very supportive of extracurricular activities. I appreciate their support for our student athletes. The economic times for the community and district are tough right now. It is nice to see our Board is taking the financial burden of participation off our families.”
Please note that while students are excused from the $60 pay-to-participate fee, those participating in extracurricular activities will still be required to pay the $30 fee for the initial drug test. The following activities are subject to drug testing:
- All School Sponsored Sports
- Drama
- Marching Band
- Bowling Club
- Ski Club
- Flag Corp & Majorettes
Those interested in obtaining a parking permit are also subject to drug testing. To learn more about the Board’s recent decision, visit www.bucyrusschools.org.
