GUIDANCE AND COUNSELING SUPPORT
The elementary school counseling and guidance program is an integral part of the total elementary school program and complements learning in the classroom. It is child-centered, developmental, preventative, and is aligned with the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) national standards. The program encourages students’ social, emotional, and personal growth at each stage of development.Counseling is conducted individually or in small groups when requested or determined appropriate. It is voluntary and confidential. Parental permission is obtained prior to any extended individual or group sessions. Needs are met through:
Individual Student Counseling
Small Group Focusing
Interventions for Academic, Behavioral, and/or Emotional Concerns
Parent / Teacher Consultation
Classroom Guidance and Character Education Lessons
A large part of classroom guidance lessons focus on character development, anti-bullying, and learning friendship and problem-solving skills. Typically, Mrs. Stuckman teaches the Pre-K, Kindergarten, and 1st Grade Classes, and Mrs. Light teaches the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade classes.

HOW IS A CHILD REFERRED TO THE COUNSELOR?
Parents, teachers, nurses, and administrators may request that the counselor talk with a child. Children can refer themselves by simply asking to talk to the counselor or filling out a “Student Referral Form” located in classrooms.
WHY REFER A STUDENT FOR SERVICES?
First and foremost at Bucyrus Elementary School we encourage the parent-child relationship. However, there are instances when a child may need to discuss their fears or worries with the counselor or other staff. Social, emotional, or physical problems can make it difficult for a child to learn and be successful in the classroom.
Any problem that is interfering with this could be a reason to see the counselor. Mrs. Light and Mrs. Stuckman work with children, families and teachers to try to eliminate any barriers to learning by providing necessary support.
